Description

RED HABANERO SPICY CHILI PLANT IN JAR

Habanero (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) Is a pepper cultivar name, typical of the Yucatan Peninsula. There are many varieties, including the hottest cultivar recognized by the Guinness Book of Records until 2006, when it was supplanted first by Bhut Jolokia and then by Trinidad Moruga Scorpion. In terms of average spiciness, habanero "Chocolate" and "Orange" usually surpass Red Savina. The name habanero derives from Havana, the capital of Cuba from which it is believed to come. Many believe that it no longer grows in the region of origin, but Dave deWitt has grown some Cuban fugitive seeds, which have produced orange habaneros [1]. Often the term is used as a synonym for all varieties of C. chinense, albeit incorrectly. The world's largest producer is Mexico, where it is grown in Yucatan, Campeche, and Quintana Roo, however commercial crops are also present in Belize, Costa Rica, Texas and California. In recent years there are important and commercial crops also in Italy and in particular in Calabria and Tuscany.
